Michael W. Marcellin joined the University of Arizona in 1988, and currently serves as International Foundation for Telemetering Professor and Regents' Professor of electrical and computer engineering and optical sciences. He is a Faculty Fellow (Teaching) and a UA Honors Professor, as well.
Professor Marcellin was a major contributor to JPEG2000, for which he wrote the image compression standard used today for the distribution and exhibition of digital cinema. In 2003, he was named the San Diego State University Distinguished Engineering Alumnus.
He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and a member of the engineering honor societies Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu. In addition to numerous teaching awards from National Technological University, IEEE Eta Kappa Nu students, and the UA College of Engineering (as well as the university), he received the National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award and is a co-recipient of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Senior (Best Paper) Award.
