Call for Papers
Over the last four years, new advances have been made in creating collaborative
virtual places, populated by both intelligent agents and human players. These
virtual worlds make use of simulations in several interesting ways: to create
the collaborative environment or virtual world, to create objects with behaviors
appropriate to the virtual world, or to create intelligent agents which behave
and interact with human players in the virtual world. New applications of these
technologies are appearing in fields as diverse as business, manufacturing and
design, medicine, education and training. This conference provides a forum for
experts concerned with different fields of application to exchange new ideas for
advancing the use of virtual worlds and for deepening the role of simulation in
this area. Topic areas include:
- Interoperability among Virtual Worlds (VWs)
- Graphical and Text-based VWs
- Cyber-robots and Embodied Agents
- Avatar Development
- Tool Integration inside of VWs
- Computer-mediated Collaboration and Distributed Work in VWs
- Structuring the Information in VWs
- Supporting Virtual Communities of Interest
- Incorporating Simulation into Languages for Building VWs
- Instrumentation and Evaluation of Virtual Worlds
- Human Language Technologies within Virtual Worlds
Suggest additional topics, chair a session, or exhibit your software at this
conference by contacting the co-chairs
Dr. Kirstie L. Bellman or
Dr. Christopher Landauer before June 1st, 1997. Extended
abstracts (2-3 pgs) will be due June 15th, 1997. Notification of general
suitability for this conference will be made by July 15th, 1997. Initial
submission of final paper will be due by August 15th, 1997. Authors will
be notified of any necessary revisions or reviewer suggestions on the submission
by September 15th, 1997. Final camera-ready copy must be submitted to
SCS no later than October 31st, 1997. This last date is a hard deadline.

Authors should identify the area(s) in which they think their contribution would
best fit, and should clearly indicate whether the submission is for a poster
session or a full paper. Only papers that have not been previously published
or presented are acceptable. Authors must obtain any employer, client, or
government clearances before submission of the final manuscript.
All conference attendees participate at their own expense.
