Research Topics

My interests center on the detailed neuronal mechanisms of motion vision in flies. As a neuroscientist with an engineering background, I'd like to understand the "design plan" of neurobiological vision systems so I can engineer artificial ones which are just as good. Although I don't do much VLSI circuit design anymore, I still consider myself a Neuromorphic Engineer.

To pursue these interests, my students and I do electrophysiological studies in the brains of files, computational modeling of insect visual systems, behavioral studies of flying insects, and robotic modeling. Lately, we've even interfaced living insect brains to robots to make a "hybrid bio-robot".
