NAVSTAR Control Segment Analysis
In contrast to the NAVSTAR User and Space Segments, the NAVSTAR Control
Segment can benefit from modern redesign using OSE technology and the DCE design
methodology. All portions of the system are reasonably accessible; the number of
components are relatively small; all elements of the Control Segment are under the
control of the Department of Defense; and changes can be made without undue risk of
irrevocable loss of functionality. The remainder of this report will focus on an analysis
of the redesign potential of the NAVSTAR Ground Segment using the DCE design
methodology from three architectural views: computing, communications, and security.
